Grassroots Educare Trust

Grassroots believes that, beyond the parent, the entire community should take responsibility for nurturing young children. We believe this is best achieved within an Early Childhood Development (ECD) conceptual framework.

By ECD, we mean any setting where young children experience healthy, focused, and stimulating growth—whether at home, in a playgroup, or in an ECD centre. Empowering communities to deliver ECD is the cornerstone of our philosophy.

Central to this philosophy is our commitment to participatory learning, which values the experiences of our adult learners. Our skills programmes are primarily registered with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). These training programmes focus on implementing quality in both ECD centres and out-of-centre programmes, bringing structure into classrooms and into the daily activities of teachers and playgroup leaders.

Our training through the Site Learning Programme (SLP), Playgroup Site Learning Programme (PSLP), and Babies and Toddlers Programme has led to positive changes in both teachers’ and children’s lives. Additionally, our Support, Mentor, and Coaching (SMC) programme has demonstrated that on-site support is crucial for addressing challenges immediately.

Furthermore, our governance and financial training ensures that preschools operate effectively, with strong policies, proper accounting procedures, and clear staff contracts and job descriptions that are well understood by all staff.
