Philani Maternal, Child Health and Nutrition Trust

The Philani Maternal, Child Health and Nutrition Trust is a community-based organisation dedicated to improving maternal and child health in underserved areas of South Africa. Since 1979, Philani has championed sustainable, community-driven health solutions, focusing on maternal support, nutrition education, skills development, and early childhood development (ECD).

At the heart of Philani’s work is the Mentor Mother Programme, which trains local mothers to serve as health advocates within their communities. By identifying "Positive Deviants"—women who thrive despite challenges—Philani equips these Mentor Mothers to share effective health practices, provide maternal and nutritional support, and prevent malnutrition. This peer-driven approach fosters resilience, ensuring women and children gain access to vital healthcare, social services, and emotional support.

Philani also operates ECD centres across the Eastern and Western Cape, helping children reach their full potential through early learning opportunities. By empowering mothers and supporting children from the earliest stages of life, Philani builds healthier families and stronger communities.
