Across Africa, millions of young mothers find themselves at an education crossroads, with over 6 million out of school (source). This challenge is deeply personal yet inherently systemic, rooted in barriers that prevent them from accessing education while balancing their responsibilities. Yet, there is hope—by addressing these barriers, we can unlock not just the potential of these young women but also transform communities and countries.
The story of these young mothers highlights a powerful truth: adolescent girls and women are at the heart of any society's progress. Their education benefits families, communities, and entire economies. But a lack of access to child care, societal stigma, and policy gaps often force them to abandon their dreams.
At the Hold My Hand campaign we aim to offer a beacon of hope by catalysing change.
When young mothers succeed, so do their children. Research shows that educated mothers are more likely to raise healthy, well-nourished children who are themselves likely to pursue education. This cycle of empowerment benefits everyone, but it requires support systems that work—accessible early childhood development (ECD) services, flexible education pathways, and strong community networks.
The solutions are clear:
South Africa is at a crossroads. With campaigns like Hold My Hand, the nation has a chance to lead by example. By supporting young mothers, we honour their resilience and ensure a better future for their children. It’s time for all of us—parents, educators, policymakers, and community members—to join hands and take action.
Because when we lift young mothers, we lift a generation.
